Kelly
Dickson has been described by Jamie Cullum as "A highly individual, mature
voice with very subtle power that creeps up on you". Born in Northern Ireland
and raised in Leeds in the north of England. Kelly knew from an early age that
she would make a career in music and aged 16 was already active on the studio
session scene. She then discovered a love for jazz and her Quintet started to
perform regularly on the jazz circuit, this led to her relocating to London where
she later graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from Middlesex University.
Kelly
travelled to New York in 2003 and recorded a debut jazz album Vocal Point
with Gene Perla, John Riley, Tim Harrison and renowned saxophonist George Garzone.
Widely respected pianist Nikki Iles accompanied Kelly on two tracks later recorded
in London. In 2005, after being spotted singing by Paul Wellers drummer
Steve White, she was asked to join Steves band the Players,
an authentic funk / soul outfit consisting of three of Britains most prolific
session musicians, Steve White, Damon Minchella and Mick Talbot. Kelly went on
to tour with the Players playing many prestigious venues and festivals across
Europe such as The Blue Note Milan and Glastonbury. She also collaborated in writing
and recording the Players second album "From the Six Corners" (Sanctuary
Records). The Players are now renamed Trio Valore and Kelly occasionally
sings a Players set with them from time to time on their live dates. In
January 2007, Kelly returned back to New York with Norwegian guitarist Werner
Kristiansen and recorded a second jazz album; Doodlin again
heavily featuring George Garzone and this time was joined by Pete Zimmer and Jeff
Pedraz. In October 2006, Kelly and Werner also started working on an originals
project and recorded 6 Ways a nu soul EP featuring Mick Talbot. Kelly
and Werner are currently in the process of writing material for an album of original
songs and her band has recently been booked to support John Legend at the Dubai
Jazz Festival in February 09. Kelly is a resident singer at Londons premiere
Jazz Club Ronnie Scotts and also performs frequently throughout the UK. Kelly's
